Washington, D.C. – Chaparral House in Berkeley, California is the recipient
of the prestigious 2016 Not-for- Profit Program of the Year award from the
American Health Care Association/National Centers for Assisted Living
(AHCA/NCAL), which represents skilled nursing and assisted living centers
across the U.S.
The 49-bed facility is the only independent, non-profit, skilled nursing
community operating in the city of Berkeley. Chaparral House provides a
dynamic, life-affirming, homelike environment where privacy and
self-esteem are respected, freedom of choice and expression are
encouraged and participation and contributions are welcomed.
Chaparral House operates a robust volunteer program called “Connecting Communities.” Each day, volunteers provide a variety of services to benefit the lives and well-being of residents. Volunteers include young visitors, people with pets, mothers with babies, flower arrangers, photographers, book readers and iPod volunteers – to name a few. Last year, 340 volunteers participated in resident-centered programs at Chaparral House, for a total of 5,095 hours.
The facility also provides training to volunteers about aging, dementia, elder rights and honoring the preferences of residents about end of life care.
“Chaparral House is committed to helping residents experience a meaningful existence, regardless of their age or state of health,” said James Gomez, CEO/President of the California Association of Health Facilities. “Their program to connect to the local community serves as a great road map for others in the long-term care community.”
Chaparral House will be recognized at AHCA/NCAL’s 67th Annual Convention and Expo, October 16-19, 2016, in Nashville, Tennessee.
